The Hummingbirds

My most favorite thing to do
when I am able to take the time
is to sit out on the front patio
in the shade
of our very large tree.

This tree speaks to me.
I've watched it through
the big picture window
in every season.
It's abiding constant
has brought great comfort.

I have competition too!
The birds love this tree as well.
I have seen so many
and heard their voices sing.

This is the first year
that I have noticed the hummingbirds.
Flying in and out.
Stopping to rest on the branches
and chasing other birds.

How odd, I thought to myself.
I didn't realize hummingbirds
were so aggressive.

In talking to a friend last night,
she suggested there might be
a nest.
Well now, that makes sense!

So this morning,
there is my little hummingbird.
And then I saw it!
A little bitty nest.
And I am excited!
It's a first for me.

It is small,
an inch high
and inch and a half wide
made of a mud substance
along one slender branch
about 12 feet from the ground.

As I write, I see a little head
poking out, looking about
and keeping watch
over its little claim.

Hummingbirds are so beautiful!

I hope to get a picture
of this little nest soon,
for all to see.
