I Look Into His Eyes
I love my son Nathan.
Whenever I can,
as I do with all my children
is to look into their eyes
and linger there.
But wouldn't you know,
it makes my boys uncomfortable
and the biggest complaint
I hear is,
"Mommy, stop looking at me."
Sigh. I can't help it.
These are my children.
I have known them and loved them
since before they were even born.
I prayed at each stage of development
as they grew in my belly.
Each week I was devoted
to reading in the book,
"What To Expect When You're Expecting".
Each week I wrote my heart
and feelings for them.
I worried about the hiccups I felt
and when they didn't move
in my tummy, when they should.
I sang to them
and wondered how much
they understood.
And when they were born
and they were snuggled
on my chest,
how surreal it felt.
Each one mine.
I never had a brother
so to have a baby boy
and then having two -
intrigued me.
These little baby boys
were so cute.
Amazing what it does to your heart
to be completely depended on.
So I know as they get older,
it may seem weird.
But when I look into their eyes,
I can remember
all the sweet and tender moments
we've had together.
Today my son Nate came over,
he looked into my eyes
to ask me a question.
Time stood still
as I enjoyed looking into his
while he waited for my answer.
But he caught on
and looked away.
"Mommy, you're looking at me."
I smiled and I shared my why.
Yes, I am an opportunist.
I took looking into his blue eyes
and got lost in them.
As he walked away
with his answer,
my heart smiled.
He made my day.
Maybe he'll need something else soon.
And I can look into his eyes again.
Whenever I can,
as I do with all my children
is to look into their eyes
and linger there.
