To My Son Nate

When a person walks into a room, they can change an entire atmosphere. When you walk into the room, you bring a peace and a steadiness to it much like a chaplain does when he walks into a situation. He administers spiritual care and has an understanding that is right in certain conditions.

You listen. And when you do, you are intent on not only their words, but you are hearing the unspoken needs and responding from a place that is sensitive to them so as to bring them comfort and not add to any agitation they are already experiencing.

You care for the unnoticed ones and offer them genuine caring actions and your friendship even when you may rather be alone and quiet. You do it because there is a pressing need and you feel that. You move forward with them because you hear the call to do so.

You give advice when the need calls for it, not just because it would benefit you, but it benefits the person themselves. You don't want to see them hurt or disciplined unnecessarily so you try to warn them. They may or may not listen to you and may throw some mud back in your face but it falls to the ground because you acted for their benefit. It may sting for a moment but you let it go. I love that about you.

I feel at peace when I'm with you. You have that steady calm. You have a sparkle of hope in your eyes. Even when you are extremely tired, you politely listen to others and reply with grace and humility.

My brave son, I love who you are and the gentleness that is quite rare in todays world. Don't ever worry if you feel you fail the harsh demands of others expectations but keep going in that rare beauty of doing what is noble and right. Keep your integrity because you are a man who loves God first. You have so many who love you and are praying for you and your beautiful future. I am so proud of you!

"The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of compassion and good deeds, free from doubts and insincerity.  The harvest of uprightness is grown from the seed of peace by those who are peacemakers."  James 3:17-18
