You Bag Of Dust
I was sweeping the garage the other day. Our cars track some dirt into it and every so often, we just sweep it back out. And as I was sweeping, the dust was flying about and I had this thought. It says in Genesis 2:7;
“then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.”
Dust. God formed us out of the dust from the ground.
And I had to smile at the thought. God made human beings in His likeness from an earthy substance and breathed into us the breath of life. What a show-off! God had already made spiritual beings to worship and serve Him. It says in Job that the angels shouted for joy as the morning stars He created sang together. The angels watched as He created the earth and the universe.
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone — while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? Job 38:4-7
He even pointed out His bag of dust named Job. He pointed him out to the devil:
“The Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?’ Satan answered the Lord, ‘From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.’ Then the Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.’” Job 1:7-8
God had to have been so pleased. Here was an angelic creature standing in front of Him who He created but had risen up with pride against Him and was cast down to having dominion over the power of the air of earth. And then in contrast, here was a very mortal human being made of nothing but dust and who had to have even the breath of life breathed into him by God.....Here was this bag of dust, loving and serving God faithfully and uprightly.
Well, that made the devil pretty mad that day. So he presented a challenge to God. If all was taken from Job, he would surely curse God. The devil thought that Job was only loving God because God had blessed him so much.
Challenge accepted.
Well, we know that Job, that Godly man, made of dust, continued to reverently love His God in spite of the terrific things that happened to him. And God was sure that he would.
You too, oh bag of dust - mortal, finite - have been entrusted with the very breath of God and given His power to not only conquer evil, but to love and serve God with your own heart and will. God did something in us that defies all the spiritual hosts out there. How that must just upset the devil. He wreaks havoc and tries to overcome God’s people but they keep loving and serving their God through it all. In fact, it even makes God’s people stronger in their faith as they trust and look to Him through all they go through.
Take that devil. These bags of dust will love and serve and glorify their God come hell or high water. Because God’s own breath is in us. It isn’t our strength or power, it’s His. And He is enough! Smile you bag of dust.

Look to Him and be radiant. No devil can touch that!
