The Tender Ache That Longs to Fill the Distance

I would have never have known

the sweet and tender ache 

that comes with having to say goodbye

if I had never have had to leave

ones who wiggled into my heart

and there to always stay.

The ache longs to fill the distance

and rush toward face to face.

Truly, messages online and email 

and even the less frequent calls

are nothing compared to being with

the ones you love.

No matter what I have to do,

all of me is happy to sacrifice time,

resources, sleep and personal comfort

for the sweet privilege 

of filling the ache with your presence

dear friend.

Saying goodbye is painfully sweet.

And the ache will keep you 

in my heart and prayers

until we meet again.
