The Hug

I know it may seem silly,
but it isn't a trivial thing.
Once you find Life giving
one never wants less living.

And why should it be
a matter of triviality
in this Life
we have in Christ?

The hug.

In this world of disconnect
and in the rush
of the cold orders
and the doing
in exchange for a paycheck -
the hug stands
in complete opposition.
It is extended
for the intended
as arms envelop
a living, breathing being.

We've lived so long
expecting that everything
has an agenda
and out for personal gain
without regard
for the simplicity of being
or the exquisite value
of the one we are with.

The hug.

Sure, it is a vulnerable thing.
Your arms are opening
and enveloping another.
It is wordless -
a non-verbal that speaks
volumes.

The hug.

It touches, in a world devoid
of skin to skin.
Where research has shown
the power of touch
to transform.

Make tomorrow a different place.
Hug the ones in your life.
Make it a point to do it.
It will be awkward at first.
But the more you do it,
the more beauty you will find.

For each one you wrap
your arms around
may find the courage
to wrap their arms around you.

It is a miracle.
