I Was Lovable When You Loved Me

When you loved me,
I could do no wrong.
My mistakes and issues
were worked out,
overlooked and even forgotten.

I was lovable when you loved me.

You loved me into kindness.
You loved me into forgiveness.
You shared your life
and modeled friendship.

I became lovable in your love.

What once lay insecure
from lack of practice
found many chances to strengthen.
It was trial and error at first
but you loved me in the failure
and in the triumph.
Even as the triumph
swung the pendulum
to the side of pride,
and I was tempted to despise you,
you loved me back to balance.

I am becoming more lovable
in your steady love.
The once captive from love
now captive by your love
and free.

Keep loving my friend.
I know it isn't always easy.
But the hard work
will accomplish a harvest
when many model
your steadfast love in Christ
to those around them.
