Off The Religious Grid

Please rest assured
that I am sure to displease
those who found safety
within a certain grid of ease
to stick to a rule
of measure to conform
and misuse of one
of the unspoken rule
is sure to find you aloof
considering me a fool.

If thou were One to be pleased
as if you were one alone,
I may find your rule
something I care to conform.

But stiff has no flex
and rule has no hold.
Because all were given
a way to know
from the least to the greatest
a most precious freedom
from religious land-locking grip.

And now choose a new way
of living by a breath,
a tongue, a wind
where dry bones begin to live
and army stand
where once lay dry
in religious grid.

Ah dear heart stirred by living,
to flexing, mobile, soft and real.
Would I choose to go back
to bone and brittle?
Never, no never!
You keep your bone
of contention.
For I have found the spring
and the river.
As surely as root holds fast
to water
and never to be pulled away
is as surely as my heart
pants to stay
in thee O God.
