Its Friday Night
Driving West toward the sun
to pick up my first guest,
I smile with anticipation.
It's Friday.
It is late afternoon
and early enough
to pick up a carload of friends.
They pile in.
It's the same each week.
There is something
to being together,
discussing food choices,
as we ride to the preferred store,
talking, sharing carts
and generous giving of need.
A pit stop today
caused a spontaneous decision
as U-turn accusation
produced laughter
because it was more like a J-turn.
A fun little ditty
sung by a young friend;
"Deb's supermarket, count on us."
Sure, I have some food at home.
It must seem like a lot!
Many hands make light work
as we start the menu
for the night, together.
Who knew a simple request
could turn into a joke of abuse
as cans of beans opened
and spewed out a deluge.
I didn't mean to hurt you.
The tears were streaming down.
C'mon sweet onions,
you weren't supposed to cause
such harm.
What a surprise of love for me,
the ladies handed
and a half dozen red roses
my nose attractively dived
to breath deeply.
Fried hot dog feast.
Chili, cole slaw and beans.
Chips, pop and pickles
as well as a surprise chocolate cake!
Call from friend,
my heart skips a beat.
"A bat", she exclaimed.
She knew I'd come to the rescue.
Adventure of a lifetime
and so much fun.
Hugs with friend and family
and the night has barely begun.
A happy birthday chorus
as lighted candles
grace the surprise cake,
sharing roses,
camera's snapping pictures
to remember forever.
Then back to homes
my friends must go
with hugs and prayers.
Where did the night go?
It's Friday night.
All so different and yet the same.
For all who really need friendship.
May they be filled with Gods love
to overflowing.
