The Beauty of Contrast
Have you ever thought of what bacon would taste like if it was the only meat to be eaten?
What about coffee? What would life be like if the only coffee we had was the kind served in gas stations and nothing else?
What if we were not given any choices in life and we all had to choose the same thing?
Today, I went to make myself a cup of coffee and thought I would enjoy a cup of my favorite....only to realize I only have a couple more cups of that one left. And in that moment, I thought about the fact that I enjoy that specific kind more than the rest because I have several varieties to choose from. The contrast in the flavor of my favorite one is enhanced because I've tasted the flavors of the others. If my favorite one was my only choice, it would soon be an ordinary taste to my tastebuds.
Do you ever wonder sometimes why God might have allowed sin and darkness to have its way in this world and in our nature? Why couldn't he have made us to naturally want to be righteous and to be godly all the time?
I think it is so that we would see or "taste" the difference that being like Him is like verses living for ourselves. The contrast makes His way more attractive.
The difference is quite a real treat for those who have known the complete opposite in living lives that were trapped in sin and now they get to enjoy the new life God has made for them to enjoy.
Maybe for us who have tasted the goodness of God a very long time, sometimes forget this fact and we want to hog this goodness to ourselves without even realizing it. Truly, our lives lived in Christ do put off a sweet savor. Sharing Christ's life with those around us helps us see the contrast more and blesses those who need the contrast to get a taste for something better.
