My Son And Our Evening Together

It was late into the evening
when I left my sons home
last night.
I could hear his footsteps
behind me
as we walked out to my car
together.

My thoughts were in this moment
and my heart smiled deeply inside.
What a pleasure to have children
and to enjoy their company
as adults.

It was in the moment
that I realized how good
are God’s ways in letting us
have families.

My evening with my son
was such a pleasurable night.
I brought fresh roasted
coffee beans and grinder,
organic half and half
and he got out
his drip coffee maker
for the 1st time and we cleaned it
and ran some water through it
and enjoyed the process
to make a good cup
for each of us.
He got out his little container
of sugar
and I stirred some into
each of our cups.
Poured in the cream
and made sure to re-stir.
We sat and relaxed
and sipped our warm brew
without hurry.
Then went ahead and cleaned
and organized a bit.

Processed some good ideas
together
and dreamed of a trip to Paris.
Then the task of bringing in
all the boxes and things
he had stored in our basement.
We worked on bringing those things
up the three flights of stairs
together.

He shared songs with me
on his Google home
as I worked on the dishes.
We caught up on life
and what’s been going on.
I took his old Keurig
to look at and try to fix
when I got it home
and he helped carry it
to my car.

And when I pulled away,
I rolled down my window
to say goodbye again
and the easy
“I love you” was had
to and from.
I love this grown son of mine.
I am grateful God gave him
to my husband and I.
He has always brought us joy
just as he is.
Together is a delightful thing.
