“You Learned Me Everything I Know”

Sometimes, things are said
that grab your attention.
The moment I heard them
I knew they intertwined
with depth and meaning.

“You learned me....”
How beautifully conveyed
from years of closeness -
these things happen
when you let go.
You let go the need to
control,
the need to change someone.
Not that any of that
comes naturally.
The way’ves beat at times
as storms rolled in.
But we sheltered our hearts
deep into the arms
of our Savior.

We waited and the storm
passed.
And we shared the joy
of the brilliant rainbow
of God’s love left behind.
We came away better people.

“Everything I know.”
We gleaned from each other,
taking away the good
and throwing out the bad.
Everything I know
came out from closeness.
It wasn’t some kind of abstract.
It wasn’t a class we took
or something we heard from another.
It was sharing life
in all its intricacies
and all the adjustments
and learning to care,
to listen deeply,
putting another ahead
and their needs.

I can’t help but think
that when we get to heaven
that we might have
this same brilliant thought
when we see Him,
“God, you learned me
everything I know.”
And eternity filled with joy
having come away
from this short life on earth
with a deep closeness
that has delighted us both.
