Your Life Is Teaching Me

Don't think for one moment
that what you say doesn't matter.
That your responses to others
aren't heard.
When you are quiet,
the way you engage,
the stuff you overlook
and let go.
How about the stuff
you don't let go?
I am learning a lot from you.

I see you with others.
I see the way you care,
the moving toward
when others move away.
You engage with the hurting
and sacrifice time
and even your own interests
for the interest of others.

You tell me you are committed
when our relationship is rocky.
You hear my fears
and assure me.
Your eyes light up
when you see me.
I know your commitment is real.
When your eyes don't twinkle,
and I see you are down,
I feel bad
to have hurt one so kind.

Your gentleness
with me and others.
Your initiations
and invitations
all teach me.
Your life has moved me
and taken me to a new place.

Now I do the same.

Your life is teaching me.
Relationships are important.
People are important.
I am important to you.
And most of all,
you have shown me Jesus.
